No pun intended to spice girls.

My dad bought me a spice girls DVD when I was much younger. I think, I think, he thought I was too introverted and quiet and need motivation or some push to be more hip. So I grew up a spice girls fan, I wasn’t more hip though.

The Original Spice Girl: Lot’s wife

Today I want to talk about another spice girl in history.

I wonder if anyone has made a movie about her or if they might in the future.

A long time ago, before the birth of Christ, one man had welcomed two visitors to his home and defended them from being violated by a gang of lustful men in the city. He had done this at the risk of his own safety and that of his family members.

In return for his kindness, the two men, who turned out to be angels had instructed him to flee the city with his family.

The city, known as Sodom and Gomorrah was to be destroyed due to the towering immorality within it.

They were led out of the city by the angels, and this was the instruction given to them, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”

They didn’t get to mountains, they went to a small village close by, “But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.”

This is a sequel to my previous write up on Uncle Kalu’s sermons.

What baffles me is, why salt?

Why was Lot’s wife turned into a Pillar of Salt?

Why not stone or marble? Why not a tree?

Salt is a useful household and industrial element. However, do you know what the Bible says about salt that has been thrown out, what follows is a trampling under the feet of men.

Would you dare to use salt that has been exposed to the elements in your cooking? I wouldn’t dare.

Have you ever felt like a pillar of salt?

And we are like Lot’s wife a lot of times in life.

Have you ever experienced a situation where you felt trampled upon? Have your thoughts or ideas ever been dismissed or thrown out without a second thought? Has your hard-work ever been dismissed without as much as a glance?

I’ve been a spice girl before.

Because I wasn’t in the right environment.

Because I didn’t have the right frame of mind.

Because I didn’t know better.

If you’ve ever felt like this, you are not alone.

If you’ve ever felt like this, you either let yourself down and compromised on things you never should have. You probably settled for a situation or relationship that was less than ideal.

If you’ve ever felt like a worthless piece of crap you probably took too much time in leaving a relationship or work environment that was never meant for you.

Nah, I will never blame others for my misfortune because that’s giving them too much power. And neither should you.

What’s your Sodom and Gomorrah?

Sodom and Gomorrah in this case is anything that stifles your life.

Anything that silences your voice.

Anything that withholds your shine.

Anything that weakens your spirit.

Anything that all of the substance within you screams against.

Anything that feels foreign or contrary to your beliefs and principles as living being.

Whenever you get a prodding to flee Sodom and Gomorrah, flee and do not look back.

Some may not be lucky enough to have angels lead them all the way to the outskirts of the city, even if there is already a fire, and it’s deep and mighty and you feel suffocated, if that’s the last breath you’re holding onto, crawl out of that mess.

And when you have left, never look back.

If you’re not advancing you’re retreating.

You can’t be moving forward and looking backwards at the same time.

I have so many write ups on here about Moving forward, not looking back, having no regrets.

I can’t blame Lot’s wife really. It’s not easy to up and leave a place or a company.

She probably had investments, she may have formed friendships, she may have had a nice garden with edible vegetables or pretty flowers. She probably didn’t have plans on leaving Sodom and Gomorrah, so of course she took a second glance at what used to be her home.

So I guess one question to ask ourselves at every junction in life is — Is this is it? Is this where I want to be? Is this what I envisioned for my life?

And if the answer is No, keep working towards your goal and when an opportunity presents itself, do not think twice. Do not look back.
