This Thing Called Life: Cheers to 2023

When I was much younger, I had a lot of role models, many of them heroines and heroes who had achieved impressive feats in society, I wanted to be like them. Well, maturing a few years down the line, that changed. All those people were still very much impressive but I didn’t see myself being like them or choosing the paths they had chosen. I don’t really have role models; it’s not a thing of pride. For me, it’s more about knowing who you are and where you want to go.’

I’m at a cross roads in life now. I’m not really practicing what I studied for years in school, medicine. I’m taking my time about that and there are so many opinions from family and friends about where I am and what I should be doing. Many of them well intentioned.

It bugs me sometimes and other times it bugs me not.

Writing is one of those things I thought I would have become an expert at by now. I had kept it aside for a bit and I’ve picked it up again.

This note today is an exercise in writing and a reminder to you and I that life is in stages. The road taken or the road not taken is not straight, it could be curved, stony, and full of potholes, broken and even blocked. The sign posts may be blurred, new roads and angles will keep emerging. The finish line is not fixed.

The key I’ve found is to know who you are and trust that you have what it takes and you’ll get there at your own pace. As Chinua Achebe said, where the runner reaches, there eventually will the walker reach. Another key to staying afloat is gratitude. Life keeps giving to those who are grateful.

It’s a new year, Cheers to 2023! And cheers to all of us fellow sojourners, we will win at this thing called life!
