There Ain’t No Backup Calvary

A Poem

Have you reached those high walls yet?

The place where you pause

The pause is where you decide

Where you clear your eyes

To take in how far you’ve come

To gauge how much farther the journey is

Yet you see the dust that rises in the distance?

An enemy legion advances

Do you hear the bang bang of giant drums?

The encroaching echoes of a war set to happen

Deafening the thuds of your heart

The vibrations reverberating to your knee joints

A striving lays ahead

You do not need to strain to see it

The drenching sweats do little to wipe away your fears

Will you remain atop the fence?

Would you turn back to familiar territory

Would you retreat to where you may no longer be welcomed?

Or would you grow some nerves to seed in foreign territory?

A thought arises

Perhaps you could ask for help from allies?

No. The fire beacon has almost gone out

They know the enemy is upon you

Yet their silence is louder than the enemy’s chants

In this vast expanse, how could you be all alone?

The realization sets in

They do not see what you see

They cannot hear what you hear

Fight you must, Conquer you will

You will not crash to oblivion

This is your springboard to a great landing

Straighten your spine pioneer

You are your vanguard

Steady your aim soldier

You are your marksman

Solidify your stance comrade

You are your Calvary!
