A Biblical Perspective
“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died” John 11:21
Mary, Martha and Lazarus are acquaintances with Jesus and when Lazarus falls ill, they send for Jesus.
This is a serious matter, they have shared it with Jesus because they expected that He could offer a solution.
Their brother is sick, they need him(Lazarus) to be well. It’s not too much to ask, they know what Jesus is capable of, this is a small feat for Him.
So when Lazarus progresses beyond illness to death, there is some disappointment.
Martha says, “Lord If You had been here” — her expectation failed to catch up with the reality.
Martha’s expectation is based on the information that Jesus can heal Lazarus.
Expectations are not bad, they give us something to look forward to, they give us a reason to keep pushing day after day.
And the Lord promises that the expectations of the righteous shall not be cut short.
Your Expectations of God are too Small
The problem with human expectations is that it is often made with the knowledge and understanding that was available at the time.
So sometimes our expectations are smaller than what God has in mind for us, because we have limited what He can do for us, because of how little we know.
Because what God has in store for you is much bigger than your expectations as well as those of your family and Society, it takes a little longer to materialize.
And so we need to learn how to wait.
We need to wait because the bigger a thing, the longer the preparation time. There are some blessings you can’t handle right now because you’re not yet equipped to steward them. Even the waiting is a preparation season.
Martha believed that Jesus could heal but her faith needed to go a step further.
She just wanted healing, but Jesus was coming for death!
It hits different going through life knowing that your victory is not just over illness and disease, your victory is over death.
He was raising Lazarus as a foreshadowing of what was to happen!
We see events in isolation but God sees them in tandem.
Jesus wasn’t just going to take care of one disease, all disease ultimately ends in death.
He was coming for the strong man, death!
Bigger expectations can take an extended time to materialize and it’s easy lose heart in the waiting.
This season, I don’t know what you are trusting God for?But I can tell you that God does not deal on a small scale.
He is not just coming for you, He’s coming for generational poverty, He’s coming to release generational slaves, He is coming for a generation of people that have been blind and oppressed.
When God opens a door, it’s not just for you, it’s for everyone whose destiny is connected to yours.
We easily get disappointed because we feel that our expectations are reasonable, change that mindset, perhaps your expectation is too small, and God is preparing something bigger which is why you need to wait.
And when God answers you, don’t stop waiting, the journey of Faith is not a static one, it is dynamic, there is always a greater height to be attained.
Thought it tarries, wait!
Keep trusting God, He will not fail you!
