I haven’t written a lot of poems nor other articles of recent. My writing is usually activated by bursts of inspiration and I’ve struggled with staying consistent in the past few months. My writing process is very scattered and yet still predictable or followable.
The first step is to write, always! When ever I have a topic I write out the topic. If I have an outline for my topic I add that and then I go back to each outline and add sentences or phrases when ever they come to mind. I use notes app on my phone and one day. I also usually have a hard copy notepad for when I need to rest my eyes from any devices such as a laptop or telephone.
In simple sentences, here’s how my writing process works;
- Have an idea or thought
- Write it down
- Break down the idea ( make an outline)
- Top up your breakdowns
- Read your write up. Read it out aloud. Think of it as making a presentation to the public and consider what sort of questions they may ask. In poetry, you can decide whether to answer those questions or not.
- Hit publish if you’re ready,
Things will never always be perfect. You won’t always have all the answers and your viewpoint may still be limited. But hitting publish makes sure that in the future you can follow up on the growth of your thought process. If you feel deep down that something is lacking, keep that piece as a draft and keep searching for those answers.
I know that to sell, one needs to study to their readers and appeal to them. But I still believe that a writer writes for themselves more than the reader. It’s your unique personality that no other person might have. Your writing flows from your background, your personal history and your self reflection, your journey in life.
Write to leave a piece of yourself on earth. A piece of yourself you would like to embrace years from now.
“ We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in restrospection” ~ Anaïs Nin
